What Are the Results of Not Maintaining Your Roof?

There is no substitute for a series of timely roof inspections. This is especially the case if you live in a home that is over 20 years old. Chances are good that the roof has not been inspected since it was first installed. If this is the case, there may be any number of problems that are waiting to happen. Now is the time to get your roof inspected by a professional service so as to forestall any issues that may arise.

Your Roof Will Begin to Sag

You may suddenly begin to notice a severe sag in your roof. This will be visible from outside of the property. It will be especially visible from the top floor or attic of your home. The ceiling will literally begin to look like it is starting to cave in. There may already be a few punctures where wind, snow, sleet, ice, or rain is beginning to come into your home. This is one of the tell-tale signs of an impending roof collapse.

Strange Stains Will Begin to Appear

One of the most blatant signs of an impending roof issue will be the appearance of strange stains in various areas. These will normally include the ceilings, walls, and floors of your home. Again, your top floor or attic will be one of the first places to look for these stains. You may also notice water beginning to run down the walls of your home.

Black Mold or Bacteria May Develop

Along with the stains will come a series of sharp, pungent, and extremely unpleasant odors. You may also begin to notice patches of mold or bacteria. If you see a large number of black spots, this could herald the appearance of black mold. Should this be the case, you need to take action immediately. The presence of such mold, if left unchecked, could lead to your home being declared unfit to dwell in.

You May Become Aware of Cracked or Broken Tiles

You may start to notice cracked, bent, or broken tiles accumulating on your attic floor. You may also notice them around your property. They may have literally just started to flake off the roof and fall down to the ground. Should this be the case, you need to call a professional roof renovation service immediately. The fact that your roof is flaking off tiles like dandruff is a sign of imminent collapse.

Your Utility Bill May Begin to Skyrocket

Another very blatant sign of a problem with your roof is the sudden spike that you may notice in your monthly utility bill. This may well be due to the fact that wind, snow, sleet, ice, or rain is getting into your home from cracks or holes in the roof. If this is the case, it will cause your HVAC to work harder to compensate for the drop in temperature. This will lead to a major hike in your monthly spending in this area.

You May Notice Flooding Around Your Home

One of the biggest issues you may begin to notice is the buildup of water around your home. This may well be due to clogs in your gutters caused by debris that is coming off of your roof. In most cases, gutter clogs are due to tree leaves, branches, and other debris. However, in this case, cracked or broken tiles may also be contributing to the clog.

The result may be a backlog of water that suddenly begins to build up all around your property. This can lead to the flooding of your basement or patio areas. It can also lead to nasty stenches due to the buildup of stagnant water and bacteria. You may also notice pools of water standing in other areas of your home.
