We’re officially in the storm season, which means, as a homeowner, you need to take measures to make sure your roof is ready in case a big one hits the area. In today’s post, your local roofers at Universal Roofing Specialist LLC shares a quick guide for preparing your roof for the storm season.
Start with a visual inspection of your roof. On a clear day, take a pair of binoculars and inspect every inch of the roof. Pay close attention to signs of wear and damage, such as missing shingles, dark spots or discoloration, missing or displaced flashing, and sagging areas. Next, climb into the attic and see if you can see pinholes of light — these indicate holes that will need to be repaired. Have your roof repaired by your roofer if you find such problems.
In addition to protecting your house foundations from water damage, clean gutters will also help prevent flooding and backflow during a storm. You can choose to clean it yourself or have it cleaned by professionals. If you choose to clean it yourself, make sure that the joints and seams are sealed afterwards. If you find signs of corrosion, have them repaired by a gutter professional. Also, consider investing in gutter guards or covers.
If you have trees on your property, trimming them can help lower the risks of damage to your roof during a storm. Branches that touch the asphalt shingle rooftop can scratch at the outer granule layer (or coating, if you have a standing seam metal roof) and expose the underlying layers to moisture damage. Leaves, twigs and needles can contribute to gutter clogging. Branches can fall on the roof during a storm. A local arborist can help you trim the branches without harming the tree.
If you haven’t scheduled your annual roofing maintenance this year, now is the best time to do so. In addition to helping fortify your roof against storms, maintenance allows your roofer to identify issues and perform repairs before they become bigger problems that would cost more to fix.
